Viva Mexican Modernismo!
Almost as good at being at Zona Maco (not really!)
Another year, another missed opportunity to go to Zona Maco which everyone raves about (it opens today), well they are mostly raving about Mexico City, but the art fair holds its own, and I would much rather be there than in Quatar where Art Basel is planting yet another flag (it opens tomorrow), good luck with that guys… nothing like being in the Middle East right now, warm weather, lots of art, cruise missiles, aircraft carriers on the move, EXCITING! Anyway, I digress…
This is another lazy “repost” from a MONDOBLOGO post from 2011, from a little gem of a book I thrifted down in North Carolina when I was visiting my parents. I find the best stuff in Western North Carolina. The influence and confluence of art (Black Mountain College, Penland) and money (the Vanderbilt’s), beauty (the Appalachian Mountains) and the vibrant music and crafts culture that has been Indigenous to the area since the Cherokee Nation started making pine needle baskets in 600AD. The tradition of craft and its appreciation runs deep. Anyway, man did I get off track, but I do love it down there. ANYWAY, back to Mexican Modernismo:

I found this book in a thrift store yesterday, (for a dollar), “10 Arquitectos Mexicanos”. Pretty sweet little book. The printing is for shit, but the architecture is outstanding. Here are some of my favorites, and since I can’t read Spanish, I can only give you the architects name and not much more....
Luis Barragan
Francisco Artigas
Juan Sordo Madaleno
Mario Pani
Enrique De La Mora Y Palomar
Augustin Hernandez
Juan O'Gorman
Francisco Artigas
